About Institute

The Indian Sugarcane Research Institute (ISRI), Lucknow was established in 1952 by the erstwhile Indian Central Sugarcane Committee for conducting researches on fundamental and applied aspects of sugarcane culture as well as to co-ordinate the research work done on this crop in different States of the country. The Government of India took over the Institute from the Indian Central Sugarcane Committee on 1st January, 1954. On April 1, 1969, it was transferred to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi alongwith other central agricultural research institutes.

Location

The Institute is situated 4.8 km from Lucknow Railway Station (Charbagh), 8 km from Alambagh Bus Station, and 12 km from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport Lucknow at Rai Bareli Road (26.56oN and 80.52oE) at 111 m above mean sea level. Distance from New Delhi is about 500 km and well connected to all major cities of the country.

Climate

The climate of the location is subtropical semi-arid. The summer season, spanning from mid March to mid June, is hot and dry with mercury exceeding 40oC quite frequently in recent past. The long term monthly average maximum temperature for April, May and June are 36.4, 40.0 and 38.5oC. The monsoon normally commences from 18-21 June and extends till last week of September. The average rainfall during last five years has been around 880mm and rainy season in primarily unimodal (nearly 80-85% of precipitation received during monsoon). The winter season starts from mid November and is extremely chill with mercury touching about 1oC at times. The long-term average minimum temperature for November, December, January and February are 11.5, 7.3, 7.0 and 9.7oC.
